APRIL 16, 1993 GAY PEOPLE'S CHRONICLE 17

ON THE AIR OFF THE PRESS

Hearings carried live;

by John DuAne

Cable's C-SPAN is carrying full, live coverage of the congressional hearings on ending the ban on lesbians, gays and bisexuals in the military. The daytime coverage is repeated late at night. The hearings are being held about every other day; check C-SPAN for times of coverage. The hearings are also covered live and in full on national public radio, WCPN FM 90.3 here.

In the Life, the new all-gay national TV variety show carried once a month here on WVIZ Channel 25, will cover the April 25 Lesbian, Gay and Biequal Rights and Liberation March with five cameras. Entertainment Tonight's Garrett Glaser and Cleveland-based comedian Karen Williams will co-host this half-hour March special program. A highlight of the program will be President Clinton's address to the marchers. This is a far cry from the 1987 March which was totally ignored by the president and most other politicians, with the notable exceptions of openly-gay Rep. Barney Frank and the Rev. Jesse Jackson.

The March on Washington special broad-. cast will help close out the first season of In the Life which went on the air on just five public television stations nationwide. In the Life is now carried by over 55 public television stations around the country and is signing on more stations each month. In case you miss this special broadcast, videotape copies will be available from In the Life, 39 West 14th Street, Suite 401, New York, NY 10011 for $19.95 plus $2 shipping. Keep an eye on this column and your TV listings for broadcast time in this area.

Fans of the comic strip "For Better or For Worse," carried in the Plain Dealer locally, know by now that starting Friday, April 2, teenager Michael's friend Lawrence has come out of the closet to him. Lynn Johnston, the 46-year-old Canadian mother of two who created the strip, stated that she had planned to introduce Lawrence as a gay character years ago. Johnston said, "Lawrence being 17, I felt it's time now for him to say something about how he feels. He has always been a little different, and I've always known he was gay. Now, at age 17, he's ready to tell someone and he's chosen Mike." Johnston said she based the character on several gay friends, including her brother-in-law. Johnston said she also

expects some controversy but that she's "not trying to change anybody's mind. I'm just showing a young man people have known for thirteen years who happens to be a little different." So far, only a few of the 1,400 papers that carry "For Better or For Worse" have refused to run the five-week storyline, including Lake County's conservative News-Herald. To complain, contact the News-Herald at 951-0000.

Hope you got to see that very out of the closet lesbian comic, Lea Delaria, on the Arsenio Hall Show in early April. Sorry I did not have any advance information about her appearance on the show. Delaria is noted here for being the main performer at last year's Pride celebration in Cleveland. Unfortunately for me, I fell asleep with the VCR button in my hand before she came on the air. My friends who did stay awake to see her, however, said she was outrageous and very funny.

Barbara Walters interviewed country music star Garth Brooks on her 12th annual ABC Oscar-night special. Brooks won an award from GLAAD, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, at their annual media awards banquet. Brooks won for his song, "We Shall Be Free" which calls for freedom "to love anyone we choose." Brooks is also a member of PFLAG, Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. Others receiving awards were the ABC sitcom Roseanne, for including gay characters in the show, and openly lesbian and gay members of the military.

Broadway actor Mandy Patinkin says that when he saw the musical Falsettos he yearned for the lead role, a man who leaves his marriage for his male lover. Patinki said "it was the only time I can ever remember being desperately jealous of someone having a role I really wanted." Patinkin recently replaced Michael Rupert in the lead role. Patinkin said of his role "I play him as a man who happens to be in love with a man, but also with his son and wife. It just tears me apart in the gut, the struggle for a cohesive family. I have no hesitation about bringing my sons [Isaac, 10 and Gideon, 6] to this, because it's about love."

Landscape Without Gravity, Barbara Ascher's story of her grief over the death of her brother Bobby from complications due to AIDS.

The March 22 edition of People magazine featured an article following up on the Louds, a family whose lives were documented in a 12-part series on PBS in 1973. One of the children, Lance, was noted for coming out in the documentary.

Lance is the same Lance Loud who is now a columnist for the Advocate. Most recently he has become a contributing editor to Details magazine. The same edition of People also carried an interview with Anthony Summers, author of the controversial best-selling biography, Official and Confidential: the Secret Life of J. Edgar Hoover. The book details the gay life of the late FBI director, who was infamous for his public anti-gay and racist positions.

USA Today reported that rumors about a romance between lesbian tennis star Martina Navratilova and lesbian pop star k. d. lang

were untrue.

Although I don't usually report on stories in the tabloids, two of them, the Globe and the Star, ran large articles about Married with Children star Amanda Bearse in which she discusses her sexual orientation. Bearse, who plays the Bundys' next door neighbor, Marcy, also talks about Amy Shomer, her lover of three years, and their upcoming adoption of a baby.

I just noticed that the Sun newspapers have started a personals section. Unlike the personal ads in the other publications in the area, the Sun papers restricts its service to

"introducing non-married individuals of the opposite sex to one another." A call to the Sun papers got a response that questions and comments should be directed to the national service that runs the section. To complain, follow the lead of Amy, co-host of WUJC's gay radio show Hold That Door and call the Sun newspapers at 800-5231458 and write to: General Manager, VIP Communications, P.O. Box 180, Vernon, CT 06066.

While you're at it, send a copy of your letter to GLAAD at their new address: 150 West 26th St, suite 503, New York, NY 10001, or try calling them at 212-807-1700

Last, but not least, the April edition of Northern Ohio Live features a cover story about Cleveland fashion designer Denajua, who talks about what coming out about her gender reassignment has done for her career and life, and a profile of Dr. Nuala Archer and her efforts to maintain the Cleveland State University Poetry Center. Dr. Archer was a guest on GayWaves a few months ago. Also in the April issue is a review of some of the nine lesbian and gay films in the 17th Cleveland International Film Festival.

All nine films will be shown at the Festival April 16 through the 23 in Hoyt's Tower City Cinemas; call 349-FILM.

Finally, don't forget to listen to GayWaves on WRUW 91.1 FM every Friday from 11:30 to noon and our other live lesbian and gay radio shows: John Horner's Hold That Door on WUJC 88.7 FM Thursdays at 10 pm, and The Gay 90's, Buck Harris and Karen Harrison's new show on WHK 1420 AM Fridays at 9 pm.
